a small studio · cutting stories from paper
Bedtime
is a little boat
on a very big sea.
Paper Moon makes handmade picture books for small humans — and the grown-ups brave enough to do all the voices. Every page is cut, torn, and layered by hand, then lit by a paper moon.
The shelf
Six little books, each one cut by hand.
No two copies are exactly the same — the paper decides. Pick one up; it tilts like you just lifted it off the table.
In the studio
We make books the slow way, on purpose.
Every spread starts as a stack of coloured paper and a very sharp knife. We cut each shape by hand, layer them until the light catches the edges, then photograph the whole scene before it's ever a page.
It means our foxes have real shadows and our seas have real texture. It also means we make about four books a year, which is roughly four books more than we have time for.
- 01Cut
Each character is trimmed from hand-dyed stock, one blade at a time.
- 02Layer
Shapes are stacked with foam risers so every piece throws its own shadow.
- 03Light
A single warm lamp, angled low, turns flat paper into a whole evening.
Make a wish
Draw a star for the fox to sail by.
He's out there every night, and the sky could use a few more. Click and drag on the night to leave one — it stays as long as you do.
